What are critical systems?
Infrastructures that serve to supply vital functions and whose disruption or destruction would lead to significant impairments of social well-being.
POWER
is the Achilles heel of all sectors, especially the ICT sector.
If it fails, parts of the communication networks can only be operated for a short time, which can have far-reaching consequences for the economy, state and society.
For example, logistics chains would be interrupted and goods deliveries or remote maintenance and control of systems are no longer possible.
It is also serious that in the event of a power failure, communications as well as the exchange of information between actors would be very difficult and emergency numbers would no longer be available.
According to German law §8a Abs. 1 BSI-Gesetz, the operators of critical infrastructures are obliged to take appropriate organizational and technical precautions to avoid disruptions to the availability, integrity, authenticity and confidentiality of their information technology systems, components or processes that are essential for the functionality of their operated critical infrastructures.
In these live environments, some supply chaines cannot be fully shut down and require intervention in the active state. A high degree of precision is required, because every error can cause the failure of parts or even the entire operating system. The maintenance and repair of supply elements and technical components must be fulfilled and documented in specified intervalls in order to guarantee the highest level of operational safety.
